Weekend Post- Reggaeton

Reggae: Reggae developed in the 70's in Jamaica and has gone through numerous changes since then, having been combined with other sounds and rhythms. Panama was the first place where Reggae was performed in Spanish, while the first Spanish rap appeared in Puerto Rico. It all happened in 1985, and in the years to come this movement arrived in other Latin American countries as well as in the United States.

Reggaeton: Reggaeton is a form of dance music which became popular with Latin American youth during the early 1990s and spread to North American, European, Asian, and Australian audiences during the first few years of the 21st century. Reggaeton blends Jamaican music influences of reggae and dancehall with those of Latin America, such as bomba and plena, as well as that of hip hop. The music is also combined with rapping (generally) in Spanish. Reggaeton has given the Hispanic youth, starting with those of Puerto Rico and Panama, a musical genre that they can consider their own. The influence of this genre has spread to the wider Latino communities in the United States, as well as the Latin American and Central American audience.

Reggaeton's roots are from Panama with the music evolving and coming to prominence in Puerto Rico. Reggaeton starts as an adaptation of Jamaican reggae (and later Jamaican dancehall) to the Spanish-language culture in Panama.

The origins of reggaeton begin with the first Latin-American reggae recordings being made in Panama during the 1970s. Reportedly, the Jamaican reggae influence on Panamanian music has been strong since the early 20th century, when Jamaican laborers were used to help build the Panama Canal. Many people believe that reggaeton originated in Puerto Rico because many of the artists that make music that has a genre of reggaeton are Puerto Rican.

Weekend Post- Looking at the Stars (poetry)

Still Looking at the Stars

I tremble at the site of a bowed and black man,

Battered and beaten by slavery's eternal scars and ties.

Children robbed of their innocence, families separated,
loneliness, heartache, misery.

Still looking at the stars!

Powerful brother, relateable to all,
Clutching Freedom's bars in his hands.

Deserving of the equal, but not granted.

Still looking at the stars!

Black Power Movement

"We have talked long enough about equal rights in this country. It is now time to write the next chapter and write it in the books of law."
– President Lyndon B. Johnson to the Congress, 8 January 1964

MLK Jr.
You faced injustice, hate and strife.
You fought for what should be.
You risked and finally gave your life,
So others could be free.
You could have hated, but you chose
To love and understand,
Rejecting violence to oppose
An evil in our land.
You'd not inflame, but still inspire,
With hope that wouldn't yield.
You called for boycotts, not for fire,
With faith your only shield.
You marched in protest for the poor
Of every shade and hue.
So many hardships you'd endure
For those who needed you.
You stirred a nation's heart and mind;
Your message still is clear:
That color's not how we're defined.
Your memory's always near.
Each year your birth's a holiday.
The nation honors you,
And wonders when we'll see the day
Your dream at last comes true.

Weekend Post- Athena (mythology)

The Greek goddess Athena is usually portrayed as one of the most benevolent goddesses, strong, fair, and merciful. Athena is known as one of the three virgin goddesses, referred to as virgin because they were able to remain independent, unswayed by the spells of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and the consequent pull of marriage and motherhood. Romance and marriage did not feature in Athena's mythology. In Greek mythology Athena was, in essence, the prototype of the contemporary "career woman".

Weekend Post- Narcissus (mythology)

Narcissus was a beautiful looking boy. He had long, flowing, blond hair, beautiful, bright, blue eyes and even, white teeth. Many young ladies fell in love with him including the nymph; Echo.

Nymphs were lively spirits who lived near streams and lakes and protected trees in the forest. Echo had upset the Queen of the Gods; Hera. As a punishment Hera made Echo unable to speak except to repeat the last three words of the person she was talking to.

Poor Echo fell in love with Narcissus but could never tell him how she felt. Narcissus teased her and she ran away with tears pouring down her face. Aphrodite, the goddess of love saw what happened and decided to punish Narcissus. As he came to a pool of water Narcissus saw his reflection and fell in love with the vision he saw...it was of course his own reflection.

Poor Narcissus watched his own reflection, every time he tried to touch the face of the vision he loved it broke up on the shimmering surface of the water. Narcissus stopped eating, lost his beautiful looks and pined for his love. Eventually he faded away and died. Aphrodite took pity on him and made a flower grow in his place on the bank of the lake. Narcissus flowers can be found to this day growing wherever you can find water and trees.

Weekend Post- FLowers :/ (Poetry)

I once saw a flower,
It was as pretty as a sunset on a nice summer's day.
I then smelled it,
and it smelled as sweet as a bee's honey.
The pedals flowed in the wind
like something swaying.
It was a symbol,
it represented me.

Weekend Post- Dont stop 'till you get enough (Festivals)

Every September there is a parade on Labor Day. The parade is called the West Indian Day Parade. There are people everywhere selling food, drinks, flags, and just about everything else you can think of. My family and I go and celebrate and have fun every year. There are all types of food such as cury, chicken, hot dogs, shish-ka-bobs, corn, rice etc. They also sell drinks such as beer, soda, juices and water. The best part of the whole thing is the music. Everyone plays a selection of genres of music such as Reggae, Soca, Reggaeton, and even Salsa. The only thing I don't like about the parade is that you have to stand up for large amounts of times. But the experience is definitely worth it. Click here to view a website for more info about the parade.

Weekend Post- Metro Cards

The MTA is claiming to take away free metro cards from school students. This spiked major conflict between parents, teachers, students and the MTA. The MTA claims they need to make cuts and that doing this is necessary however parents and others feel that this will only have a negative impact on students. Students will stop going to school because it will become to expensive which will result in test scores going down and drop-out rates going up. Click here to get more info about metro cards.

Nils Bohlin

Nils Bohlin was born on July 17, 1920 in Sweden. Bohlin began his career as an engineer designing ejector seats for the Swedish aviation industry in the mid-1950's. At that time, safety belts in cars were strapped across the body, with the buckle placed over the abdomen. The position of the buckle often caused severe internal injuries in high-speed crashes. In 1958, Mr. Bohlin joined the Volvo Car Corporation as its first chief safety engineer. Using his knowledge of ejector seats, in just under a year he designed a device that would restrain the human body as safely as possible under extreme conditions. Weekend Post- Yet Another issue (teen issues)

I FEEL OVERWHELMED.... I have homework all the time and most of it seem so unnecessary and irrelevant. I have exams, they aren't that hard when I really think about it but when it's time to take it, I crack under the pressure. I want summer to come because I am so sick of the cold weather. I know these problems are very minor and problem won't mean anything to me tomorrow but right now it seems like the end of the world. Im like a ticking bomb just waiting to explode. Here is a website that helps teens deal with there issues...click here.

Police Taser Student at Basketball Game

Police Taser Student at Basketball Game (Fox News)

The crazier, the tasier

Mario Tarver, a 15-year-old student at Monessen High School, says a taser was used on him during the brawl that broke out at the school during a high school basketball game. Tarver says a fight between two girls spiraled out of control and he got caught in the brawl that spilled out the hallway. He says he was just trying to reach his sister. "I just started to walk away from him and he told the other officer to get me. When I got around the corner, he started to tase me and my track coach tried to help me," said Tarver. "It was like a stabbing, and once I fell - this lady stood over me. I just got up and tried to get to my mom. This was the important information from www.kdka.com. However much of this was not mentioned on other websites such as www.foxnews.com. If you want to view the video click here.

Weekend Post- My Issues

As a normal teen I have many issues. They seem like it's the end of the world when they arise but I always have someone to pull me back to reality when I start to over react. The issue of this month or even week is my grades. I feel like i did the best i could on my final exams but I also feel like its not good enough, like I was capable of doing much better. For example, in my english class i studied for an exam that didnt even have most of the information i studied on it. I was pissed and even then i still did not do well on the test. In U.S. History no matter how hard i study i still get in the 80s percential- i hate 80s because i feel like if your going to score high you might as well go for the 90s. Why me???

Weekend Post- iPad

Apple has created something called the iPad. It is said to be the best way to experience the web, emails, photo, and videos. The large Multi-Touch screen on iPad lets you see web pages as they were meant to be seen — one page at a time. With vibrant color and sharp text. So whether you’re looking at a page in portrait or landscape, you can see everything at a size that’s actually readable. And with iPad, navigating the web has never been easier or more intuitive. Because you use the most natural pointing device there is: your finger. Scroll through a page just by flicking your finger up or down on the screen. Or pinch to zoom in or out on a photo. There’s also a thumbnail view that shows all your open pages in a grid, to let you quickly move from one page to the next. Technology such as this is revolutionizing America.

In Haiti there was a sever earthquake and many people died from it. Many buildings, houses and school crumbled so fast. People are searching for any survivors and dead bodies found under the remains of buildings. Many different countries, states and nations are sending relief packages to help them in any way we can. And believe it or not this horrible disaster has brought us all together.

Avatar 3D

This weekend I went to the movies and ended up seeing Avatar. It was in 3D so it looked in even better. I really liked the movie because it was engaging and interesting although it was kind of long. The movie was about these scientists going to this planet and they created clones of the people that lived on the planet just with more human qualities. Through science they were able to become their avatars and learn the way of the people such as fighting, eating, sleeping and religion. The conflict in the movie was that in the avatar's home tree there was a type of stone found that was worth millions of dollars so humans were trying to make them move to get to the stones. If you want more detail go see the movie, trust me it is worth the money.

A Question of Occupation

Ever since i was little i have always wanted to grow up become known to the world. It never mattered the profession, just that i was successful at it enough to change the world. Now that i think about what i want to be when i grow there is a huge question mark. A simple question of occupation. I had once decided that i wanted to become a lawyer however i felt that the material would be too much for me to handle. Then i thought maybe i could become a doctor but i really hate the site of blood. Finally, i realized that i have a lot of time to think about and it doesn't matter what i become, what matters is that i am the best of the best at my job and that i am happy with it.
